sign on to a promise the president made last year not to raise tax rates and what about nancy pelosi's pledge pledge. >> nick from the daily caller, did republicans miss a move here? >> i think they missed a opportunity if you go back to 2010 when they sweep the house and had the president in a position where he could support a permanent extension of the bush tax cuts, and they only went for the the extension for two years. david: why is that? only go for two years as opposed to a major change in the tax code? >> maybe they were hoping that they would win the presidential election in 2012 and then have a upper hand event. but you know, they didn't go for the permanent rates, the bush era tax rates when they had the chance in 2010 and the sequester, the automatic spending cuts getting lost in the conversation are something they pretty much set up with the democrats in 2011. >> well, here specifically, here is about the millionaire cut off figure because of course, now the president says compromise going out to 4,000. here is what pelosi said in may of 2012 to speaker john boehner. democrats be

, because we're getting shots of boehner coming out of that meeting, nancy pelosi, the meeting is over, and all the major leaders were in the white house. we had the leader of the republican side in the senate, the democratic side in the senate, the republican side in the house, democratic side, geithner was there, tim giteny, treasury secretary, vice president there, and the president. the question is whether they got anything done at all. what we heard was, in fact, the president presented what was announced initially as a new plan, turned out it was not a new plan, but the same old plan to raise taxes only on those mmking above $400,000 a year. shibani: is -- it ended moments ago, all the major whose who were there, and timothy geithner. there's a ceo call at 5:30, hour and five minutes, talking to top ceos about the latest on the fiscal cliff, whatever the developments are included on that call, we know lloyd blankfein will be on the call. david: keep the picture up. you never know what picture you'll get. go to rich edson following this. we mentioned the fact, actually, you alerted us

, dagen, he didn't have the votes to do it. so nancy pelosi is going to have to provide a lot of votes to get this done. but, you know, here's the thing i think is really interesting about this whole debate. i heard one of your previous news segments saying oh this is going to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars. it's not going to come anywhere near reducing the deficit by a trillion dollars. if you do this tax increase on the rich, you maybe raise 40 billion dollars a year. that's not nothing, but 40 billion dollars over a year over ten years that's 400 billion. we're running a trillion dollars deficit. this is not a solution and not serious. that's why it always comes back to dealing with the spending side of the aisle because that's where the deficits come from. dagen: last thing, steve, what about the fate of house speaker john boehner because there's a lot more at play than just raising taxes on people who make more than a million dollars with what we saw happen last week? >> yeah, you know, i have always been a fan of john boehner's. i've known him for 20 years. i think he's

, nothing new and from democratic leader of the house nancy pelosi, her spokesperson saying, quote, i don't know anything right now. as of now the cliff remains clearly in sight. if nothing is done on january 1st, the nation faces a $5 trillion tax increase over ten years through the expiration of a george bush tax cuts and assuming congress does not approve its annual patch for the alternative minimum tax and medicare doc fix that prevents deep cuts in medicare the laps of the tax cuts would mean the top tax rate would revert back to 39.6 in the clinton administration from 35% now but taxes will also go up for tax rates would go up for lower-income earners. the maximum lowest rate reverting to 15% from 10% and for investors capital gains rates would revert to 20% from 15% and depending on the analysis the average family would pay 2,000 to $4,000 more in taxes next year. dennis: quick follow-up. in terms of profitmaking in washington is now officially impossible to get a fix in place by december 31st? is it impossible? peter: it is not impossible. you are probably referring to this three da
